The Legal Services Unit provides a broad range of legal advice and services within the Office of Commercial Services as well as to the Office of Research, Research Students Centre and Development Office for research and other commercial activities undertaken by QUT with business, industry and governments. Services provided by us include:

  • Legal advice about research activities, contracts and intellectual property
  • Legal drafting, reviewing and in some cases negotiating contracts
  • Advising on student intellectual property issues and scholarship agreements
  • Advising on QUT policies relating to research and intellectual property
  • Interpretation of legislation and other law

The Legal Services Unit does not advise on all matters. Please contact the University Legal Office for queries relating to other QUT matters not within the scope of the Division of Research and Commercialisation activities.

The Legal Services Unit carries out work under direct instructions from business managers within the Office of Commercial Services and authorised personnel within the Office of Research, Research Students Centre and Development Office.

All lawyers within the Legal Services Unit are qualified solicitors who hold practising certificates granted by the Queensland Law Society. The lawyers are bound under legislation, professional ethics and solicitors’ rules and accordingly, can only act for QUT. The Legal Services Unit does not provide advice to students or to individual staff members unless the matters are directly related to the discharge of that staff member’s duties at QUT.

For further information on lawyers and where to obtain independent legal advice, please contact the Queensland Law Society.
